Karaoke parties help people relax as the music engages both sides of the brain and singing helps to keep vocal muscles working.

Karaoke In the Psych Ward  is a prototype for designing volunteer-led mental health programs that foster socialization in hospitals, hospices, schools, shelters, soup kitchens and community non-profits free of charge.

Through a series of articles, poems and anecdotal essays we offer information to expand, support and create curriculum and events that respect the privacy of vulnerable populations.

When someone has spent a long period of time living in a heathcare facility.

returning to their old friends and previous social circle can produce anxiety.

My goal was to throw weekly parties for patients in hospitals and nursing homes to combat isolation and boost the confidence and social skills of long term hospital patients getting ready to be released.

Over 25 years ago, when I first pitched the idea, people laughed at the idea, then came the push back, mostly from music and recreation therapists who have a different agenda for putting together a playlist.

But I persisited until I found a tribe of faithful volunteers. Now it’s time to pass the baton and inspire other to try this.

It is easy to mask depression, loneliness and body dysmorphia.
